The Federal Government will create a diversity website to promote the country’s diversity in finance, in a move that comes amid calls to do more to ensure Australians are not stereotyped as a particular race, colour, religion or sexuality.
The Government will also launch a “gender equity” website to showcase the countrys diversity, with a gender quota of two people per job for public sector employees.
Treasurer Scott Morrison said the new website would be used by government agencies and community groups, and the Federal Government would be using its powers under the Racial Discrimination Act to make it a requirement.
“We have a diversity problem,” Mr Morrison said.
“This is a national crisis.”
The new site would be a part of the Government’s commitment to ensure that all Australians feel at home and feel valued and recognised.
“We want to see that diversity is represented, and that we are doing a lot of work to get that to happen,” he said.
“Our goal is to be a place that is welcoming and inclusive.”
Mr Morrison said diversity in Australia’s economy was not just about race and ethnicity.
“It’s about a person’s gender, their background, their language, their culture, their values and how they engage with the community,” he told ABC Radio’s Insiders program.
“So if you’re a woman, you’re more likely to be promoted than if you are a man, but if you happen to be the son of someone who is black, you’ll be more likely than a white person to be in senior management roles.”
That’s why we need to see more diverse representation in our workplaces.
“Mr Abbott said the Government was taking the lead in making sure that people felt welcomed and respected.”
This is not about race, this is about being a person of integrity and good character and a person who respects others,” he says.”
When we see people who are not represented, who don’t feel welcome and respected, we need a change.
“Mr Turnbull also promised to create more opportunities for Australians to apply for jobs, with the Government seeking to double the number of job vacancies from 2.5 million to 3 million.”
I believe in a meritocracy where all Australians are judged on their merits,” Mr Turnbull said.
Mr Turnbull said the announcement would make it easier for employers to hire people of diverse backgrounds, particularly if they had to take on a new person.”
As a company you’re looking at new faces,” he added.”
A lot of people in our society don’t think it’s good for a company to have a diverse workforce.
